What Is an eSIM and How Does It Work?

An eSIM is a digital SIM card already built into your phone. It does the same job as a plastic SIM card, but you download it instead of inserting it, which means you can get a mobile plan abroad without going to a store or changing anything inside your phone.

How an eSIM works, step by step

  1. You buy your plan online. Choose your destination on our website or in the Orange Travel app and pay.
  2. You receive your QR code by email. It arrives within a few minutes of your order.
  3. You install your eSIM. Scan the QR code, or install it in one tap from the Orange Travel app. Do this before you leave, while you still have Wi-Fi.
  4. You activate it at your destination. Switch on data roaming for your Orange Travel line once you land. That’s the moment your plan starts counting down.

What an eSIM changes for you

  • You keep your usual number for calls and texts, and use the eSIM for data abroad — both lines live side by side on your phone.
  • Your phone can store several eSIM profiles, so you don’t have to delete one trip to prepare the next.
  • There’s nothing to carry, nothing to lose and no plastic card to throw away.

Does my phone support eSIM?

Most phones released from 2018 onwards do, starting with the iPhone XR, Samsung Galaxy S20 and Google Pixel 3. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked.

Quickest way to check: dial *#06#. If an EID number appears, your phone supports eSIM. You can also see the full list of compatible phones.
