A carrier-locked phone only accepts SIM cards from the operator that sold it. Even if your phone supports eSIM, it won’t be able to use an Orange Travel eSIM while it’s locked.
Who is concerned?
Phones bought outright, in a shop or online, are almost always unlocked. Phones that came with a contract or a monthly instalment plan are the ones most often locked, usually for a limited period.
How to check on iPhone
- Open Settings → General → About
- Scroll down to Carrier Lock
- If it says No SIM restrictions, your iPhone is unlocked. If it says SIM locked, it’s tied to a specific operator.
How to check on Google Pixel
Open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs, or Settings → About phone → Device details → Network lock. If the status shows as unlocked, your Pixel works on any network.
How to check on Samsung Galaxy
Open Settings → Connections → More connection settings → Network lock status. If it says Unlocked, your phone works on any network.
On other Android phones
Menu names vary from one brand to another. Look for Network lock or SIM lock in your settings — and if you can’t find it, ask your operator directly.
How to get your phone unlocked
Contact the operator you bought the phone from and ask them to unlock it. It’s usually free once your commitment period is over, and it can take a few days.
⚠️ Do this before you travel. Once you’re abroad it’s much harder to sort out.
